Transistors are semiconductors which control
voltage and current gain.
They are sometimes described as "electronic valves".
Transistors provide amplification in analog circuits, and switching in digital circuits.
All transistors have orientation.
Because transistors are formed by two junctions of dissimilar semiconductor types called
"N" and "Y', the numbering system for transistors is prefixed by
"2" or "2N".
There is no value identification. "2NXXXX" on the component body tells you that
it is a transistor (for example: 2N1132, 2N3440).
Three connections are required for transistors: the base (B), the collector (C) and the
emitter (E).
PTH transistors are available in many packages. Some clues to identifying a transistor
are:
* 3 leads
* 2NXXX marking
* E B C (emitter, base, collector) marking
* shape
SMT transistors use the same SOT packaging as SMT diodes. In addition, there is one other
commonly used package called a D pak.
